So it's finally happened. I've been sucked into the world of soap operas. El Cor de la Ciutat is a Catalan soap opera that I admit is corny, unrealistic and overflowing with ridiculous drama- and I love it. I don't know all the story lines, but I do know the Max & Iago story, and I'm sorry but it's flippin' cute.

The run-down for non-El Cor fans: Iago is trying to straighten out his life after years of thievery. Max is a college student getting over various problems with his broken family. Their mothers are old friends, so when the women are reunited the sons inevitably meet. They are complete opposites, and really rub each other the wrong way at first. But in the end, opposites attract.

The two young men eventually become romantically involved, and for the most part are accepted by society. But, of course, it can't just be left at that. A crazy turn of events puts Iago on the run from the police when his most recent theft is discovered. He turns back to crime in order to gather enough money to leave the country and escape the police. Max is at first heartbroken that Iago did not keep his promise to him to leave his life of crime in the past, and thinks he should turn himself in. But Iago is in too deep to back out.

A man Iago works for threatens to kill him after his partner abandons him and takes their boss's loot for himself. Their boss has connections in jail that would get him if he turned himself in. So he has no choice but to steal the loot back. Max is furious with him for getting into such a mess and breaks their relationship off. But when he understands the danger Iago is in, he agrees to help him in whatever way he can- as a friend.

Because Iago's hand has been mutilated by his homicidal boss, Max provides a much-needed second pair of hands. Max puts his life on the line by helping Iago, but he remains cold to his ex, who clearly still loves him. When it comes down to the point of no return, after which Iago intends to commit a very dangerous theft and then leave the country, Iago asks Max to come with him. The thought of losing Iago for good shakes Max's resolution. Max finally agrees to leave his family, his friends and his career for his lover.

But the theft goes badly. Iago's mother catches wind of the theft and shows up to help him. He is caught by the police, and his mother is shot. Meanwhile Iago's boss discovers Max in Iago's apartment. Iago fails to deliver the loot, so Max is tortured for information. They both have a really bad hair day. Iago is sent to jail, but it turns out he did recover the loot and managed to hide it before getting arrested. His boss acquires it and removes Iago from his to-kill list, also releasing Max.

Max visits Iago as often as possible at prison and supports him even though his family and colleagues frown upon the notion. Iago understandably falls into considerable depression, and Max ultimately becomes his only reason to live. Because the charges against him are flakey, Iago is released for the time being (I don't understand all of the legal issues involved) and he and Max are free to start over.

It goes on, but that's as much as pertains to this video. In fact, it's already probably way too much information than was needed. Oh well.
