Remember the Four Cs When Dealing With Loose Diamonds

by Guy Richman

A professional diamond consultant can always help you with your loose diamonds purchase, however it is recommended to have at least some basic knowledge regarding loose diamonds and their properties. In this article you will find some of the most important things to bear in mind when looking to buy a loose diamond, so you are happy with your choice of purchase for many years to come.

At first let’s educate you about the fundamental basics otherwise known as the Four Cs rule. You probably won’t be inspecting your diamonds through a microscope; however understanding of the Four Cs will help you understand what affects the price of the diamond. The Four Cs are short for color, cut, clarity and carat.

Color: Although diamonds seem the same at first, in reality they come in a variety of colors. Eventually you might want to invest in a colored diamond, but for now we are going to discuss the regular “white” diamond. By color we understand the degree of tinting. Starting from completely colorless diamonds which are very rare and expensive and ending with slightly yellow diamonds. Grade “D” diamond is completely colorless and “Z” is slightly yellow. Most of the diamonds are somewhere in-between. When comparing several diamonds you should ask your diamond consultant if the color differences are noticeable to the naked eye. If they aren’t, you could purchase a cheaper diamond by compromising on unnoticeable color difference.

Cut: Do not confuse cut with shape. By cut we understand the proportion and light reflection of the diamond. A diamond that is cut properly allows better light reflection resulting in higher brilliance properties. If the diamond is cut too deep or too shallow it will allow light to escape and reduce the brilliance of the diamond. Since people buy diamonds for their sparkling feature, you should pay attention to the quality of the cut. Don’t be afraid to ask your diamond consultant questions regarding the differences in cuts of diamonds.

Clarity: Clarity refers to the location and number of flaws, otherwise known as inclusions in the diamond. Similar as to color quite often you can compromise the clarity for a better price if the difference between the diamonds is unnoticeable to the naked eye. Ask your diamond consultant to explain you the differences between several loose diamonds in regards to their clarity and price ratios. This will help you find the best deal possible!

Carat: Carat is the last C and stands for weight of the loose diamond. Carat also plays a huge role in the pricing of the diamond. Ask to see paperwork of several loose diamonds that have approximately the same carat weight so you can choose the quality level that is affordable for your budget. Again, you can ask your diamond consultant to show you comparisons of several diamonds of different carat weight and look for opportunities to reduce the price on imperfections that aren’t visible.

Just follow these simple tips when shopping for a loose diamond.
